About
Dan’s affinity for art kicked into high gear at Shepherd University, where the BFA program exposed him to a variety of mediums. His professional career has been focused on the design and development of interactive educational media. So art in some manner has always been close to his heart.
Phases of printmaking and illustration made up most of his early personal creative endeavors, but, in the late 2010s, he became enamored with the intricate elements found in electronics. He’s since been on a never-ending quest to find old or busted machines, take them apart, and harvest their various elements for use in his artwork. While he enjoys the process of creating new arrangements, he finds the hunt for devices and the harvesting and sorting of parts to be equally rewarding (and maybe a little addictive). Elements he does not keep all go to recycling where applicable.
Artist Statement
When something can no longer function in its intended purpose, there’s delight to be found in giving it a new purpose. Open an old DVD player and you’ll be treated to a city of tiny buildings, strung together by power lines and grids and myriad other structures that once brought stories to life. Rather than leave these parts to make their way to a landfill, I try to give them something new to do.
As I harvest long dormant elements, I love to ponder all the moments of everyday technical magic that they enabled in their previous lives and hope to evoke some of that in my work.
