Karen Helble

About

Karen has been pewtersmithing for over 40 years, with her husband, Stuart. Using traditional methods of hammering, casting, and spinning, they create heirloom pieces from ingots and flat sheets of pewter. They make all their own molds and do all their own engraving. Karen loves carving the casting molds for their ornaments. Their impressive selection of ornaments has reached over 600 different designs. She also enjoys spoon carving, calligraphy and weaving.

Brief History

As newlyweds, with grand hopes, determination, and willingness to work hard, they decided to start their own business. K & S Pewter began in a meager basement apartment. Their first “melting pot” was just a wok, heated over the kitchen stove. Their first “workshop” was in the basement furnace room. They would pack up their little Datsun station wagon and travel almost anywhere for a craft show. Things went well and in 1984 they moved to Loudoun County expanding their work area into their first home, in Lucketts. Shortly thereafter, they built a separate workshop and enjoyed the extra space! They eventually moved to a mountain spot, just north of Round Hill, cherishing the beautiful views and wildlife which inspire them daily!

The Helbles are well known for the lustrous finish and functionality of their pieces. They have demonstrated their colonial craft locally at the Waterford Fair for 36 years, done work for Mount Vernon, and been selected by Early American Life for inclusion in the list of “America’s Top 200 Traditional Craftsmen.”

Artist’s Statement

Truly inspired by what God has given us in nature, a walk in the woods, for me, is a celebration! I believe nature’s gracefulness influences my artwork and sincerely hope that it brings joy to others. Next time you get a chance, take some time to go for a walk outside and be sure to look and listen with an open mind. Enjoy!
